SP chief Azam Khan seeks ‘Z’ category security and cites threat to life

Samajwadi party senior MP Mohd Azam Khan has called on the Uttar Pradesh government to “restore its ‘Z’ category security”, citing “threats” as it faces multiple cases.

Expressing security concerns, Azam Khan said: “I had ‘Z’ grade security before. It was removed by the current state government. Even a senior police officer recommended it. I am currently offered ‘Y’ category security, similar to the security blanket provided to every MP, I want my previous security restored as I face many threats due to all the cases filed against me.

Rampur SP Ashok Kumar said: “We have not received any request from Azam Khan to upgrade his security. He has been given ‘Y’ grade security and the required number of security guards are still with him. However, I will ask the local intelligence unit to assess the threat level and write to the state government accordingly.”

Azam was released on bail in May after being held in Sitapur prison for nearly 27 months. He was convicted in about 89 cases ranging from book theft, chicken theft, statue theft, electricity theft, land grabbing, tampering and land encroachment.

He successfully contested the 2022 Assembly polls from prison.
