Birmingham: Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik picked up the country’s third medal in the fight of the day at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham by beating Ana Paula Godinez Gonzalez in the women’s freestyle 62kg category final on Friday.
Canada’s Gonzalez dominated the match at the start as she took a 0-4 lead in the first period. Then in the second period, Malik scripted a full comeback to tie the scores 4-4 and won the game by pinfall. The match lasted 3 minutes and 47 seconds. Malik entered the final beating Cameroon’s Etane Ngolle 10-0 on technical superiority.
Sakshi Malik beat England’s Kelsey Barnes 10-0 by fall in the Women’s Freestyle 62kg quarter-final to advance to the semi-finals.
Earlier, Indian star wrestler Bajrang Punia clinched the gold medal for India after winning the final against Canadian Lachlan Mcneil in the men’s 65kg at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday.
Punia was extremely dominant in the first half and didn’t let his opponent score. He finished with a 4-0 lead over McNeil late in the first period.
Grappler Anshu Malik also won the silver medal in the Women’s Freestyle 57kg category at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games after losing to Odunayo Folasade Adekuoroye of Nigeria at Coventry Arena Wrestling Mat B on Friday.
Malik faced a 3-7 loss to Nigeria’s Adekuoroye in the gold medal match. Malik won India’s first medal in the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games wrestling.
Wrestler Deepak Punia will battle for gold against Pakistan’s Muhammad Imam later tonight.
Additionally, Divya Kakran and Mohit Grewal will fight in their bronze medal matches.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games started in Birmingham on July 28 and will run until August 8. (ANI)
