Police officer detained for helping Category A thug

A 35-year-old Army Reserve officer attached to the Sunguvarchathram police station was arrested by Kancheepuram police for aiding history-flipper Guna aka “Padappai” Guna, a rowdy Category A element, in his illegal activities .

The arrest comes two days after the state government posted ADSP dating specialist S Velaidurai in Kancheepuram to monitor kangaroo courts that are twisting manufacturing units in the district.

Police said Venkatesan favored Guna by threatening a woman to take over her land last year and a hunt was on for two other police officers who were in contact with Guna and aided her in her illegal activities.

Guna, who was arrested in August last year on charges of criminal intimidation, fled after being released on bail. Venkatesan was also arrested on the same charges and remanded in custody after being brought before the Sriperumpudur magistrate on Saturday.

Police said Guna wanted the woman’s property for Rs 2 lakh her father borrowed from her.

Guna (41) from Maduramangalam village near Sriperumpudur has more than 25 cases of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and extortion in Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts.

Officials said that many of the 600 large and small manufacturing units and other factories in Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu face problems from criminal gangs, including the part of the Scrap Mafia that controls the trade that amounts to hundreds of crore rupees. However, fearing their anger, few victims came forward to file a complaint.

Vellaidurai has been involved in numerous encounter killings that have taken place in various districts of the state over the past 25 years. He was a member of the TN Police Special Task Force that shot down forest brigand Veerappan in 2004. In Chennai, he was part of the team that shot down gangster Veeramani in 2003 when K Vijay Kumar was the police commissioner. . He was also part of the dating team that operated in Tiruchy in the late 90s.
