After Punjab Eviction Orders to Residents of SC Category Villages, NCSC Issues Notice

While taking a strong stand against the government of Punjab for issuing eviction orders against residents belonging to the SC category in Bhama Kalan village in Ludhiana, the chairman of the National Scheduled Caste Commission (NCSC), Vijay Sampla, issued a notice to the state government on Wednesday and asked them to submit a response in 15 days.

NCSC chairman Vijay Sampla said that to his knowledge they had lived there since independence. The NCSC also called on the Punjab government to immediately stop the eviction campaign in Punjab and maintain the status quo, it said.

In a complaint to the NCSC, Bhama Kalan SCs said they had owned 200 acres of land in the village since 1947. “Since 1947 we have been using the land for agricultural and residential purposes. We have electricity and water connection, voter card, Adhaar card, ration card and other government identification documents at these addresses,” the complainants told the president.

“But now the ruling government is asking us to leave the field immediately. We cannot leave the earth and displace our elderly, especially those who are sick. We kindly ask NCSC to help us and protect our land,” the villagers added.
