¨ Introduction to SCA Horsemanship -1hr- A general survey of various equine activities practiced, including a question and answer period (may also have a video presentation as available). At the completion of this course, student will have an understanding of the various equestrian activities available in the SCA |

¨ Basic Horse Care-1hr- The realities of horse ownership are discussed as well hands on instruction in horse care including grooming, health & diet. Student will have a basic understanding of the daily needs of the horse, how to safely provide for those needs, and have hands-on experience with grooming a horse. |

¨ Horsemanship, with emphasis on development of ever increasing control of the horse. a. Basic Horsemanship: Lecture discussing basic use of aids, and basic seat (1 Hour). Student must demonstrate ability to safely mount/dismount and show adequate control of the mount at a walk (3 Hour Practicum). b. Intermediate Horsemanship: Lecture discussing refined use of aids, including techniques of using the reins and weight to more precisely control the horse. Student must demonstrate ability to adequately and safely control the mount at a trot (3 Hour Practicum) c. Advanced Horsemanship: Lecture discussing history of the seat, and selecting the appropriate bit for the horse. Student must demonstrate ability to precisely and safely control the mount at a canter (3 Hour Practicum). |

¨ Cavalry - The student will study the history of the cavalry and cavalry tactics, and will participate in cavalry exercises. i. Cavalry I: A 1-Hour Lecture will provide an overview of Cook’s or other accredited cavalry training system, including basic maneuvers. Student must demonstrate ability to perform basic cavalry maneuvers and understanding of cavalry commands (3 Hour Practicum). ii. Cavalry II: Lecture discussing the advanced use of cavalry tactics and history of use of the cavalry in medieval battle. Student must pass the cavalry readiness test and demonstrate ability to safely perform the cavalry charge (3 Hour Practicum). |
